As a teenager, I did not make a conscious decision to move to America or work for a company that sells high density mobile storage or mailroom furniture. In fact, after more than twenty years, I still find it difficult to succinctly describe what I do. So, when someone asks, my standard response still sounds like “Em, well it’s not glamourous but we sell shelving!” Then I have to remind myself that it’s a lot more than just shelving. It might sound crazy but I gain satisfaction in being able to re-organize someone’senvironment with better storage solutions.  I was never  going to be an American Idol but being able to supply products that are LEED certified, environmentally sustainable and just plain good looking…isn’t half bad either! Also, I believe that each country should support its workers and having the majority of our products made in the USA makes me proud of how we do business.

As the country continues to go through changes, we as individuals need to decide for ourselves what change means to us. For me, it doesn’t have to be glamorous but it sure should  be satisfying.

ADA Compliant Reception Areas

Until recently, I personally never worried about ADA guidelines or compliancy. In my every day life, I could walk to the park, run to catch the train, lift down the heavy dishes in the kitchen, lift up the heavy child who started to cry…you get the picture. Well that was until I had a little accident and hurt my foot. Having tripped over a “handicap ramp” (no lie!), I have spent more than six weeks unable to drive, unable to sleep due to nerve damage and find myself struggling to navigate my way through my regular daily commute from suburbia to the city.

I notice that elevators are in short supply, tempers are just plain short (hey Lady, move outta da way) and I have to work harder simply to function on the same level as my colleagues. My temporary setback has given me a permanent insight into the needs of others around me and I am impressed how much our products have grown to meet that need. It isn’t just good business or aesthetically cool; there is a community that relies on our innovative technology to meet their daily requirements.

That’s what history is all about and Museum’s are where we can look back in time and, if we have the foresight, foward to the future. Especially in facilities like Cooper Hewitt where they promote the necessity of design and it’s impact on the past, present and future.  Modern Office Systems, LLC was delighted to have the opportunity to provide and install the compact storage systems at their new offsite storage facility.

Working directly with the user groups, we were able to design the systems to the specific needs of each curatorial department.  We were also able to incorporate a combination of new and existing  Spacesaver shelving, Delta museum cabinets, Penco wide span and Metro wire shelving on the Spacesaver mechanically operated carriages. 

In addition to housing their large collection of 3D objects and library books, the facility also has a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory. Their needs were varied and the Museum personnel were very involved throughout the project.

The end result was a collaboration of knowledge that netted a storage system that could house all manner of objects and media with an eye on ease of use for researchers and curators and safety for the products stored.

Another very important factor was the return on investment which was covered almost immediately. We were able to save the museum funds by incorporating existing product with new and also saved them money by cutting down the square footage they needed to rent in a climate controlled facility that also gives them 24/7 security.

For example, when I grew up there were no computers in school (some say that’s not a terrible thing). But today, every school from K thru 12 is supposed to have, not only computers,  but smartboards, musical instruments, science labs, libraries, sports equipment etc available for all students.
